18.07.2003

Language: en

Sector: Secondary Education

Topic: All Topics

Geographical Coverage: All Countries

In the beginning of July the PISA 2003 Report on International Student Assessment has been presented by OCSE in London. The report assesses how far students near the end of compulsory education have acquired some of the knowledge and skills that are essential for full participation in society. Apart from a wide geographic coverage, the report also provides new insights into the individual characteristics and family backgrounds that students bring to the learning process In that respect, the countries which succeeded in creating egalitarian educational systems (Canada, China and Japan) have obtained a higher scoring in relation to the competence of their students. As far as European Countries are concerned, Finland, Ireland, UK, Sweden are highly positioned in the cross country ranking , whereas Italy, France and Germany are placed in an midway position
